Off-Season Adventures: Ice Skating, Snowshoeing & Cross-Country Trails Around the NH Lakes
Just because the ice is forming doesn’t mean outdoor fun ends. The NH Lakes Region offers plenty of off-season adventures for residents and visitors alike. Here are some ideas to get outside (safely) this winter:
- Frozen-lake skating & pond hockey. When the ice is thick and safe, lakes like Winnipesaukee, Squam, and Newfound sometimes offer natural ice expanses. Always check local ice thickness and conditions before venturing out.
- Snowshoeing & winter hiking. Trails around the lake region (such as those in the Mt. Washington and Belknap ranges) offer snowy solace and quiet views.
- Cross-country skiing. Local ski centers or town parks sometimes groom trails. Grab some skis and glide through pine-framed landscapes.
- Ice fishing (for the adventurous). Check local regulations—but for those equipped, early ice can bring quiet solitude and fresh air.
- Wildlife watching & winter photography. The low light, frost, and quiet create magical photo ops. Watch for deer tracks, ice formations, and winter birds on lake edges.
Wherever you roam, be prepared: dress in layers, bring traction devices (microspikes, crampons), carry a map or GPS, and always tell someone your route. The tranquility of a snow-blanketed lake region is worth bundling up for.
